Parc de la Ciutadella

A spacious avenue leads us from the statue in memory of Juan Prim to the entrance of the zoo, which occupies a third of Parc de la Ciutadella.

The most important figure in Parc de la Ciutadella is undoubtedly Floquet de Neu (snowflake), the only known albino gorilla in the world.

Snowflake came to Barcelona Zoo on 1 November 1966, having been acquired by the primatologist Jordi Sabater Pi in Equatorial Guinea. Snowflake's children can also be seen in the Zoo, among the most beautiful being a male called Urko.

Apart from gorillas, Barcelona Zoo also has other primates such as the Titi, Squirrel Monkeys, Chimpanzees, "Papiones", Macaques, Colobuses, etc. There is also a wide range of animals from the diverse African fauna, such as the gnus, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, buffalos.

The carnivorous animals have their own facilities. There are tigers, lions, panthers, snow leopards, leopards, lynxes, etc.

One of the most picturesque spots of the zoo is the artificial mountain which represents the mystical Montserrat sierra where we can find Iberian fauna such as wolves and wild goats.

The Zoo's aviary is characterized by having a mammal as its star, the flying squirrel. This is a bat whose extended wings are almost two metres wide.

You need to buy a ticket to visit the terrarium, as it does not form part of the zoo's resources, like the aquarium.

Other services include the children's zoo, with its pony rides, snack bars, and a gift shop, as well as the Zoo's Department of Education which periodically organizes short courses on Ethology, and a guide service which can also be hired to visit the zoo.
